General Hospital’s most unexpected romance just got the ultimate stamp of approval — from one of the people creating it.
James Patrick Stuart (Valentin Cassadine) sat down with Steve Burton and Bradford Anderson on the “That’s Awesome” podcast and opened up about the Valentin-Carly romance that has divided and delighted GH fans in equal measure.
And what he said about working with Laura Wright (Carly Spencer) might surprise you.
“Who Would’ve Thought?”

Stuart didn’t hide his own amazement at how the Varly pairing has evolved. “It’s one of those things where, ‘Who would have thought?'” he told Burton and Anderson.
And he’s right. On paper, Valentin and Carly shouldn’t work. He almost accidentally poisoned her. They come from completely different worlds within Port Charles. And yet, the chemistry between Stuart and Wright has been undeniable.
What started as a strategic alliance has grown into something that feels genuinely electric on screen — and Stuart acknowledges that the credit doesn’t belong to him alone.
Stuart’s Praise for Laura Wright

When it comes to making Varly work, Stuart was emphatic: it’s Laura Wright who elevates every scene.
“I love how much thought she puts into it and how ultimately everything just sort of gets reduced to what’s really essential,” Stuart said.
He went further, noting that when fans rewatch their scenes, they realize: “Wow, you guys really got a lot of emotion going. You got a lot of people thinking about stuff. And not much was happening. It was just two people kissing each other.”
That’s the hallmark of great soap acting — creating maximum emotional impact with minimum dialogue. And Stuart credits Wright’s instinct for restraint: “The temptation is to just show everything and to do everything. She was like, ‘I think that we can be a little more thoughtful than that.'”
Why Varly Works When It Shouldn’t

Part of what makes the Valentin-Carly pairing so compelling is the danger underneath it. Valentin is still hiding. Carly is still protecting her family. Neither of them can fully trust the other — and that tension makes every intimate moment feel like it could be their last.
Stuart’s interview confirms that both actors are approaching these scenes with intention and care, not just chemistry. That’s why Varly feels different from a typical soap romance — there’s weight behind every look, every touch, every word left unspoken.
The Challenge Ahead
But challenges are coming. Spoilers suggest Valentin may be forced back on the run if his scheme with Carly falls apart. Charlotte is growing impatient. And the constant threat of exposure hangs over everything.
If Valentin has to leave, the separation could either solidify Varly’s foundation or shatter it entirely. Based on Stuart’s comments, it’s clear the actor is invested in making this relationship last — but GH has never been kind to couples who seem too happy.
