Let’s be honest: Drew Quartermaine is done.
Not officially, not yet. But the character has been thoroughly, irreversibly destroyed. Two years of back-to-back villainy — manipulating Willow, tormenting Michael, ԁrυgging people, betraying the Quartermaines — and there’s no redemption arc clean enough to wash that away.
The writers have backed Drew into a corner so tight that the only logical move is to write him off entirely. But here’s the thing: Cameron Mathison is too good to lose.
The Drew Problem
Drew wasn’t always this bad. When Cameron Mathison first took over the role from Billy Miller, there was hope. The character had a heroic arc, a genuine connection to Scout, and a sense of purpose. But somewhere along the way, the writing shifted Drew into full supervillain territory — and unlike Sonny or Valentin, Drew’s darkness doesn’t come with charm. It just comes with cruelty.

Fan reaction has been brutal. One commenter put it perfectly: “I have been extremely vocal about how unpleasant it has been for the last two years of watching Drew try to be a super villain. It just doesn’t work.”
Another noted: “He will never be Billy Miller, and I think that is part of the problem.”
So Bring Him Back — As Someone Else
This is the theory gaining traction right now. GH has a long history of actors playing multiple characters. It happened with Tony Geary (Luke and Bill Eckert), Robin Mattson (Heather Webber after originally playing Hope), and more recently with recasts that completely redefined characters.
Cameron Mathison has the range. Before GH, he spent years on All My Children as Ryan Lavery — a role that required him to play hero, lover, and occasionally loose cannon. GH fans who remember that era know he’s capable of far more than what Drew’s current arc allows.
What Kind of Character Would Work?
The fan consensus is leaning toward an anti-hero — someone who fights for the right causes but isn’t afraid to get dirty. Think Jason Morgan without the mob ties. Think a character who could slide into the chaos of Port Charles and shake things up without carrying Drew’s baggage.
As one fan suggested: “He should be redeemed but come back more as an anti-hero. Someone who would fight for good causes, but do whatever it takes to accomplish it.”
Others have suggested a Cassadine connection, a WSB agent with a mysterious past, or even a long-lost relative of an existing character. The possibilities are wide open.
The Precedent Is There
GH doesn’t waste talent. When a fan-favorite actor is attached to an unsalvageable character, the show finds a way to keep them. The question isn’t whether Cameron Mathison will return — it’s what name he’ll be using when he does.
For now, Drew’s days appear numbered. But Cameron Mathison’s GH story might just be getting started.
