Nearly two years after a heartbreaking tragedy took him from the world, General Hospital alum Johnny Wactor is being officially recognized for the incredible bravery he showed in his final moments. The beloved actor, who tragically lost his life while protecting a coworker, has been awarded a prestigious posthumous honor by the Medal of Honor Society.
A Selfless Act of Bravery
The Medal of Honor Society recently named Wactor a 2026 Single Act of Heroism Honoree. The award recognizes the immense courage he displayed during the early morning hours of May 25, 2024. Seeing several individuals attempting to steal his vehicle’s catalytic converter, Johnny’s instinct was to protect. He bravely stepped in front of his coworker to shield her from harm, suffering fatal injuries in the process. He passed away in her arms—a devastating end that the Society states completely embodied his “lifelong commitment to protecting others.”
Family Accepts the Honor
Johnny’s mother, Scarlett, alongside his youngest brother, Grant, traveled from Los Angeles to Virginia to accept the award on his behalf. The emotional presentation was conducted by retired US Army Command Sergeant Major Gary Littrell. According to Scarlett, a dedicated fan nominated Johnny for this immense honor, and he was ultimately selected from a highly competitive pool of more than 300 applicants.
The Medal of Honor Society ensured the family was well taken care of, flying them to the D.C. area, covering their accommodations, and allowing them some time to sightsee. Scarlett expressed deep gratitude that the organization chose to recognize her son alongside so many incredible heroes.
Legal Updates Regarding the Tragedy
As the family continues to heal and honor Johnny’s legacy, the legal proceedings against the individuals involved in the incident are ongoing. Two men, Leonel Gutierrez and Frank Olano, recently pled guilty to robbery charges related to the event, receiving sentences of 4 years and 5 years, 8 months, respectively.
Meanwhile, the two main suspects, Robert Barceleau and Sergio Estrada, are facing the most severe charges connected to the fatal encounter. Both have pled not guilty. L.A. County District Attorney Nathan Hochman has publicly stated that they will not face the maximum possible penalty for their actions, though the fight for justice remains active in the courts.
